Here is some history along with some legend. Legend has it that the first fireworks were accidentally invented when a chinese cook spilled saltpeter, an ingredient sometimes used to flavor food into an open fire and noticed how it created an interesting flame. Ultimately saltpeter became an ingredient used in making gunpowder. During the Song Dynasty between 960 through 1279 a monk named Li Tian is credited with inventing gunpowder which was used in firecrackers made from bamboo shoots. These firecrackers were used to scare away evil spirits during new years celebrations. Ultimately through the centuries, the chinese adopted fireworks to celebrate many other celebrations from weddings to military victories. Another legend speaks about a man named Wan Hu that during the Ming Dynasty between 1368 and 1644 while sitting in a chair, had his servants tie gunpowder propelled rockets to the chair as he held 2 kites with the hopes of becoming China’s first astronaut. As you can imagine, it didn’t bode well for Wan Hu. Legend says that when they lit the rockets there was an explosion that left no sign of him or his chair after the smoke cleared. Exactly 10 years ago today and 359 years later on October 15, 2003, China finally makes history as they send their first manned spacecraft into space and Yang Liwei, a 38 year old lieutenant in the People’s Liberation Army makes chinese history as China’s first astronaut.
